Combating the Destructive Trifecta

Do you want to spend less time on your phone every day? Do you wish to divert your scrolling habits into something more productive? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Turn off the notifications.

Notifications can be distracting; many students might choose to enable DND when writing an essay, or completing homework. Now, those activities are productive ones, so why not mute your notifications all day? This does not have to be your whole phone, as some people work on their phones or require communication on their phones for something important. So, how about turning off your social media notifications? Try it out, and see how it works for you!

2. Track your screen time, and set a goal.

Set a goal to reach on your screen time. Start by noticing your screen time patterns, and see how much time you're roughly spending per day on entertainment apps or social media. Set a goal, and it doesn't have to be big at first. It could be 20 minutes less, or 1 hour less. Whatever you feel most comfortable with. These things don't have to be difficult, just baby steps :)

3. Participate in a new/existing, enjoyable hobby.

Now you have some free time in your schedule, but what do you do? You could pick up reading a new book series, join a club for an activity such as chess or a sport, or do some arts and crafts! Those things might put you out of your comfort zone, but I bet a nap wouldn't. Naps can be productive too, be sure to take care of your physical and mental well-being. Meditation is also a passive activity, follow along to a soundtrack, or meditate on a positive thought. If you have some OCD, you could use the time to clean your space or organize things. The options are endless.
