Scholars: Tips to Avoid Procrastination
Dear fellow college students,
How's the procrastination going? Even if your'e crazy organized and OCD, it's hard to keep up with college. I think everyone has procrastinated an assignment at least once in their life. Time management is key when your'e in college- especially for my fellow bio majors! I wanted to share a few things I like to get into the habit of to stay on track of my assignments:
1. Start from easy to Hard.
You know that feeling when your big project deadline is approaching, AND you have homework for 3 other classes? How about adjusting your order of assignments; start with the easy things and work your way to the harder things. "Easy" also refers to things that take up less time. This can be compared to financial debt advice; financial professionals recommend paying your debt off starting with the lowest amount, and working your way up to the larger amounts. Personally, this helps me to be less stressed when completing a big project, or a long paper. My headspace feels more organized, making it easier for me to focus on things that count for a larger portion of my grade.
2. Get it done the day it's Assigned.
In some classes, I know I can get certain assignments, mainly the easier and shorter ones, done the day they're assigned. In doing this, it gets knocked off my to-do list faster, which stresses me out less. Depending on the class, it can also make the assignment easier if the content is freshly loaded on the mind. For my science majors, I like to do my lab assignments the day of even if I have a week to complete it. Go ahead and knock it out if you have the time!
3. Use your planner to your Advantage.
Personally, planning out when I want to do assignments helps make my "messy" thoughts more organized. Writing things down on paper is also proven scientifically to help you retain information, making it less likely you will forget about the assignment. If you want to one up this pointer, you could schedule a day to plan out your to-do list for the week. To compound this strategy, planning out days to do a little bit of a big assignment can help you stretch out your workload for a project/ paper. Instead of doing the whole thing in one sitting, do 30 minutes to an hour of it over the span of a larger amount of time.
I know these don't work for everyone, but hopefully they do for you! Try and out and let me know how it goes:)
